Your First Time in Therapy: What to Expect & How to Get Started

Taking the first step toward therapy is an act of self-care and courage. If you are seeking therapy for the first time, it is completely normal to feel a mix of anticipation, uncertainty, or nervous energy. You do not need to have everything figured out before you reach out! You simply need a willingness to show up for yourself.

Here is a clear, step-by-step roadmap of what working with Roots to Results Counseling looks like from start to finish.

What Therapy Is (and What It Isn't)

It IS a collaborative, culturally affirming space:

Your therapist is here to walk alongside you, offering tools, perspective, and support tailored to your lived experience.

It IS confidential and non-judgmental:

You can speak openly about perfectionism, stress, boundary struggles, grief, or personal relationships without fear of judgment.

It IS NOT a lecture or a test:

There are no wrong answers, and you do not need to prepare a speech. You set the pace.

It IS NOT a quick fix:

Real healing takes time, consistency, and self-compassion.

Our 2-Step Onboarding Process

Step 1: Seamless Intake & Insurance Verification

During your intake call, we take care of the administrative details:

  • We collect your insurance details (Anthem BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, and others) and verify your benefit coverage before your first session so there are no surprise costs (note: coverage does not guarantee payment).

  •  You receive access to a secure digital portal to complete brief intake forms at your convenience

Step 2: Your Initial Intake Session (50–60 Minutes)

In your first official session, we focus on building rapport and getting to know you as a whole person:

  • We review your background, current stressors, and personal history at a comfortable speed.

  • Answer any questions you have about our approach and credentials.

  •  Confirm that our practice is the right mutual fit for your needs.

  • We establish personalized goals for your treatment plan.

  • You gain immediate, practical tools to start using right away.

Frequently Asked Questions for First-Timers

How do I prepare for my first session?

You don't need to overthink it! Write down a few key topics or feelings you want to address, ensure you have a quiet, private space if attending virtually, and bring an open mind.

What if I don't know what to talk about?

That is entirely fine. Your therapist will guide the conversation with thoughtful prompts and questions. You are never expected to direct the session alone.

Is virtual therap as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes. Secure teletherapy provides the exact same quality of clinical care as in-person sessions, with the added convenience of connecting from the comfort and privacy of your home anywhere.
